Context: Finding surface parallels between two stories does not establish literary dependence or undermine historicity. The correct standard is whether the parallels are specific, numerous, and converge — not whether a single generic similarity can be identified in a massive text. The fact that Apollonius of Tyana is skeptics' 'best example' and still fails means the whole category of argument is weak.
