What distinguishes an elder from a non-elder: teaching AND having authority

Everything Women Can and Can't Do According to the Bible: Women in Ministry part 13 02:42:52 – 02:43:54

Mike identifies the distinguishing marks of the elder role.

What marks an elder from a non-elder is the combination from 1 Timothy 2:12: teaching and having authority in that official congregational position. 1 Timothy 3:2 requires the elder to be able to teach. 1 Timothy 5:17 says elders 'rule.' These two things — teaching and authority — are what deacons don't have as an official function.
