Summary of positive evidence for the Messianic view

ALL The Debates Over 1 Tim 2_11-15: Women in Ministry part 12 (it took me a year to make this) 10:48:38 – 10:51:11

Mike lists the accumulated arguments in favor of his preferred interpretation.

Pros of the Messianic view: (1) Genesis 3 is already on topic — Paul just referenced Genesis 2-3 in vv.13-14; (2) It logically flows: Eve was deceived → transgressed → needs salvation → salvation comes through the promised seed (Gen 3:15) → the Messiah; (3) Paul frequently uses OT typology (Hagar/Sarah in Gal 4, Christ as the Rock in 1 Cor 10); (4) Paul is already speaking of Christ in this very context — 1 Tim 2:4-6 discusses God desiring all to be saved through the one mediator, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom; (5) The words in 2:4-6 ('saved,' 'the man,' the mediator) directly parallel the concepts in v.15; (6) Paul speaks of Eve typologically (representing all women), so speaking of childbearing typologically (representing Messianic promise) is consistent.
