Rev. Prof. C.A. Briggs and a professor from University of Berlin identify the images as standard Book of the Dead scenes easily recognizable to any trained Egyptologist
Additional expert scholarly critique
Mike quotes Reverend Professor C.A. Briggs (or a similarly named scholar), who called Smith's 'explanatory notes to his facsimiles' the 'undoubtedly the work' of someone wholly ignorant of Egyptian. A professor from the University of Berlin is also quoted, who identified the papyri as belonging to the Book of the Dead and said that from the images one can 'easily recognize familiar scenes' that are well-known from Egyptian funerary literature. The professor calls Smith's interpretation a probable serious mistake.
