Harold Camping's 2011 prediction (May 21st): billboards, followers selling homes, and the aftermath
The 2011 prediction was Camping's most globally visible campaign, involving massive advertising funded by donated savings.
Family Radio ran a worldwide billboard campaign with the message 'May 21st — Judgment Day.' Followers sold homes and gave savings to fund the campaign. Mike, as youth pastor in Bellflower (LA County), saw the local billboards and recognized the error immediately based on Jesus's teaching that 'no one knows the day or the hour.' When May 21st passed without event, Camping went into hiding for 2-3 days, then re-emerged claiming it was a 'spiritual event' and that October 21st would be the actual physical end. When October 21st also passed without event, Camping eventually repented publicly, saying 'I never should have predicted the end of the world' and acknowledging that people had written to warn him using 'no man knows the day or the hour.'
