Romans 13:7 echoes the 'Render to Caesar' teaching of Jesus (Mark 12:14-17)

Skeptics Wrongly Claim Apostle Paul Didn’t Know Jesus 00:24:35 – 00:27:06

Paul's instruction to pay taxes parallels Jesus's teaching about taxes to Caesar, which was a highly contested political/religious issue.

Romans 13:7 reads: 'Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed...' Mark 12:14-17 records the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus by asking about paying taxes to Caesar. Jesus's answer — 'Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's' — bears an obvious connection to Paul's instruction. Mike notes the coin/image imagery and how Jesus turns the question into a broader principle about belonging to God whose image we bear.
