Tithing is an Old Testament concept; Christians are required to give but not mandated to a 10% figure

Live Q&A - Theology, Apologetics and The Christian Life 00:57:06 – 01:00:10

Viewer asking Mike to reconcile his teaching that the tithe is not required with the obligation to give

Mike argues the 10% tithe is part of the Mosaic law, which Christians are not under. The OT tithe went to the Levites in Israel, not to a modern church. The NT commands generous giving to support church leaders (1 Timothy 5 — "the laborer is worthy of his wages," don't muzzle the ox), care for the poor (widows in 1 Timothy), and giving is assumed/encouraged but the 10% number is not a NT command. He uses the example of a billionaire — 10% of a billion is excessive to give to a single church and one could give more wisely to multiple causes.
