Charles Talbert (1977) identified the Gospels as ancient biography; Richard Burridge confirmed it
The scholarly turning point on Gospel genre.
In 1977, Charles Talbert published work arguing the Gospels are ancient biography (Greco-Roman bios). Richard Burridge set out specifically to disprove Talbert but ended up writing a book confirming Talbert was correct. Graham Stanton wrote of Burridge's book: "I do not think it is now possible to deny that the Gospels are a subset of the broad ancient literary genre of lives — that is, biographies." The current scholarly consensus (or strong majority) is that the Gospels are Greco-Roman biography.
