Q&A: The ending of Mark 16 — short vs. long ending; not a threat to Gospel reliability
Q&A from an atheist about the ending of Mark and supposed Gospel contradictions.
The Greek manuscripts of Mark end at 16:8 in the best texts. Mike holds the short ending as authentic. The longer ending (Mark 16:9-20) appears to be a later addition constructed from material in the other Gospels and Acts. This is not a problem for reliability — it is an interesting textual discussion. The long ending's material comes from inspired sources. Mike references his "Evidence for the Bible" series for detailed treatment. He also notes the short ending may reflect that Mark was written when eyewitnesses were still around to supply the rest verbally.
