Q&A: Titus and 1 Timothy pastoral qualifications — "husband of one wife" and "having children"

The Gospels Are History Not Myth 01:08:36 – 01:09:38

Q&A on elder/bishop/pastor qualifications in the Pastoral Epistles.

The texts do not require a pastor to have children or be married — Paul himself was single and a leader. Mike interprets "husband of one wife" (mias gunaikos andra) as a prohibition on polygamy, not a requirement for marriage. "Having children" is about the quality of fatherhood (ruling one's household well) not a requirement to have children. Mike's overarching view: all pastoral qualifications except teaching ability are character qualifications. A godly character man with mediocre teaching is preferable to a brilliant teacher with compromised character.
