The first and most important tip: read the passage itself extensively — read the context, the flow of the book, parallel passages, the whole book, multiple chapters. Mike has taught studies where he never opened a commentary because all the time was spent immersing in the text. Running to commentaries first causes you to ask their questions rather than your own.
