Guest John explains why the SE questioning tactic is effective but potentially manipulative: it exploits inability to articulate beliefs under surprise
Video clip from guest John (from "What Do You Mean?")
John explains two reasons why the SE tactic works: (1) SE practitioners never take a position themselves, so they face no reciprocal burden of proof; and (2) most people have not traced their beliefs back to their foundations, so when caught off guard they can't articulate well — as would happen if asked to defend why they believe George Washington was the first president. This creates an appearance of intellectual victory without actually achieving anything substantive. John distinguishes legitimate question-asking (seeking clarity/truth) from SE-style questioning that seeks to trap.
