Pliny the Younger's letter to Emperor Trajan (112 AD): institutionalized Roman policy of executing Christians who refused to recant

How their martyrdom helps prove Jesus rose! 00:07:41 – 00:08:42

Second external Roman source confirming systematic persecution

Pliny, a Roman governor, writes to Emperor Trajan describing his procedure: interrogate Christians, offer release if they recant and curse Jesus and burn incense to Roman gods, execute if they refuse. Trajan writes back endorsing this policy. This shows institutionalized persecution from very early on.
