Hegesippus account continued: James thrown from Temple pinnacle, stoned, and killed by a fuller's club; "forgive them for they know not what they do" echo; his burial near the Temple
The detailed narrative of James's death in Hegesippus
In Hegesippus, James proclaims Jesus as sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds (echoing Jesus before the High Priest). This convinces many, prompting the leaders to throw him from the pinnacle, stone him as he lay (he survived the fall), and finally a fuller kills him with a staff/club. James prays "I beseech thee, O Lord God our Father, forgive them for they know not what they do" — echoing Luke 23:34 and Acts 7:60 (Stephen). A priest cries out for them to stop because "the just man is praying for us." James is buried near the Temple; a memorial pillar was reportedly still standing. Mike notes he prays for his killers, paralleling both Jesus and Stephen.
