Extra-biblical corroboration: Herod Archelaus and Matthew 2:22

A Bunch Of Reasons Christianity Is True: special guest Jonathan McLatchie 00:56:30 – 00:59:38

McLatchie gives Josephus as extra-biblical corroboration explaining Matthew's otherwise puzzling reference to Herod Archelaus.

Matthew 2:22 — Joseph is afraid to return to Judea when he hears Herod Archelaus is reigning in place of his father Herod the Great. No reason is given in Matthew for the fear. Josephus's Antiquities of the Jews (vol. 17) explains: Archelaus ruled Judea (while his brother Herod Antipas governed Galilee, which was safer), and Archelaus had a bloody reputation. Shortly after Herod the Great's death, Archelaus massacred 3,000 Jewish pilgrims at Passover when a riot broke out at the Temple. Joseph, traveling from Egypt back to Judea and likely encountering fleeing pilgrims, would have had every reason to redirect to Galilee instead. This is precisely what Matthew says — without ever explaining why. The explanation only emerges from Josephus.
