New Testament scholar Joseph Hoffmann, an agnostic who earned degrees at Harvard and Oxford and taught at Oxford, writes that mythicists "spread ignorance disguised as common sense" and are "the single greatest threat next to fundamentalism to the calm and considered academic study of religion." He also concedes: while there is some slight chance Jesus did not exist, the evidence that he existed is sufficiently and cumulatively strong.
