The Watchtower did not always believe the torture-stake doctrine; the change occurred in 1931
Historical evidence shows the Watchtower itself used cross imagery and taught that Jesus died on a cross until 1931. The shift from cross to torture-stake was a doctrinal change introduced by Rutherford.
Evidence: (1) Pre-1931 Watchtower magazine covers displayed a "cross and crown" symbol; (2) The 1914 Photo Drama of Creation (by Russell) depicted Jesus on a cross; (3) The October 3rd vs. October 15th 1931 Watchtower issues show the transition — the cross-and-crown disappears; (4) The 1929 book Life (p. 216) explicitly states "Jesus was crucified upon the cross."
