Refutation of "all religions work": Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre as a test case

Stop Saying All Roads Lead to God! 00:08:11 – 00:12:13

First reductio ad absurdum argument against religious pluralism

If all religions successfully get adherents to God, then Jim Jones's plan worked: he led 917 followers to mass death (November 1978, Jonestown Massacre) believing he was engineering their passage to the other side. One cannot affirm "all roads lead to God" and simultaneously object to Jim Jones's method. Similarly, the Heaven's Gate cult (Marshall Applewhite III) believed that killing themselves when the Hale-Bopp comet passed in 1997 would allow aliens to beam them up; 39 members died. If all roads lead to heaven, this succeeded — but the destination would be a spaceship, not heaven.
