The elect are not a closed group from which some are necessarily excluded; election involves foreknowledge and preserves both God's and humanity's free choice
Question from Threads of Hope about whether the doctrine of election means some people simply cannot be saved.
Mike says no — anyone who trusts in Christ is also part of the elect. Election is not strict determinism. He connects election to foreknowledge without reducing it to a simplistic "foreknowledge = election" formula. His model is that God knows who will choose Him, chooses them, and also chose to create a world with these particular people — preserving both God's free sovereign choice and human free choice simultaneously. He says this is important to him as a theological commitment.
