Communion/eucharist: real and important but not transubstantiation; early church writings are secondary to Scripture; John 6 is not about communion

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 2) 00:37:27 – 00:44:08

Q from Chris Middleton about Mike's views on communion/eucharist and how much weight early church writings should carry.

Mike's core principle: Scripture is the final authority; early church writers are not apostles. He illustrates doctrinal drift using Calvary Chapel's 50-year evolution as an analogy—what begins contextually (hippies with guitars) gets formalized into an untouchable icon. He believes communion is real, meaningful, and God-ordained—not an empty symbol—but rejects transubstantiation. John 6 is not about communion (there is no Last Supper in John's Gospel) and Jesus says "the flesh profits nothing." The physical eating/drinking in John 6 means believing/trusting in Christ. He also critiques the Catholic practice of withholding the cup from laity and the doctrinal gymnastics that followed at Trent.
