1 Corinthians 13:10 does not teach cessationism — the perfect refers to seeing Christ face to face at the second coming, not the completion of Scripture

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 3) 00:44:52 – 00:47:53

Response to Brandy Medved asking about 1 Corinthians 13:10 and whether the perfect means the Bible, therefore ending spiritual gifts.

Mike calls 1 Corinthians 13:10 the worst verse cessationists use. The context of the passage equates the coming of the perfect with seeing God face to face and knowing even as one is fully known — relational, intimate knowledge of God. None of those descriptions apply to having a completed Bible. The completed canon does not constitute seeing God face to face. The perfect refers to the second coming when believers will be with Jesus in person. Therefore the passage speaks to the eschatological end of partial gifts, not their cessation at the close of the apostolic age.
