Calvinism: regeneration precedes faith — the Holy Spirit regenerates the sinner first, making belief inevitable

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 6) 00:31:09 – 00:33:13

Question from Jason Staub about whether faith from a fallen nature is "fruitful" faith, touching on the Calvinist doctrine of regeneration preceding faith

Mike explains the Calvinist position: because total depravity makes man so wicked that he will always reject God without divine intervention, the Holy Spirit must regenerate the person first. The newly regenerated person cannot help but believe — they have irresistible grace. Conversely, the unregenerate person can only reject God. This is the core distinctive of Calvinism that separates it from Arminian/non-Calvinist soteriology.
