God as matchmaker — Mike rejects "the one" theology applied universally

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 8) Fixed and Reuploaded 00:19:47 – 00:24:22

Q from Haruhi Anderson about the doctrine that God has one divinely chosen spouse for every Christian.

Mike identifies two extreme views: (1) God has a single "the one" for every person and finding them guarantees a good marriage — he strongly rejects this, calling it prosperity gospel applied to marriage; (2) God never has a specific person in mind for anyone — he also rejects this given examples like Isaac and Rebekah. His position: God may sometimes have a specific person in mind (plan A), but it is not a universal promise, not taught clearly in Scripture, and finding that person does not guarantee a good marriage. Marriage quality depends on the work of both spouses. He uses Isaac/Rebekah and Adam/Eve as examples where there genuinely was "the one." He argues Proverbs teaches finding a good person, not waiting for a mystical "the one." Once married, that person becomes "the one" by covenant commitment.
