Fighting pornography addiction — battle is lost before you even feel overwhelmed

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 8) Fixed and Reuploaded 00:50:01 – 00:54:33

Q from Nathan P about why prayer seems ineffective against porn addiction.

Mike makes two points: (1) 1 Corinthians 10:13 — no temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man; God is faithful and will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear; He provides a way of escape. Mike argues God IS already helping, and the problem is that the person has not been availing themselves of the help. (2) The fire analogy: Mike tells a story from childhood where he and a friend started small fires in a desert lot in Las Vegas and eventually one got out of control. The fire was easy to put out when small and nearly impossible once large. He applies this directly to lust/pornography: the battle is lost early — when first going on Instagram or clicking on suggestive images — not at the point of explicit pornography. By the time a person is at the point of full temptation, the fire is already raging. The solution: fight sin at its root, make no provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14), say no at the first inkling of temptation.

Eph 5:22 and Mutual Submission

The mutual and reciprocal nature of hypotasso in Eph 5:21 makes a hierarchical reading of v22 semantically incoherent. Paul cannot establish one-to-another voluntary submission and then immediately mean one-directional hierarchy without breaking the logic of his own passage.

κεφαλή (kephale) — Logos Clippings (Cheryl Schatz)

A curated collection of Logos Bible Software clippings compiled by Cheryl Schatz examining the Greek word κεφαλή (kephale) and Hebrew רֹאשׁ (rosh). The clippings draw from lexicons, encyclopedias, commentaries, and academic journals to argue that "source/origin" is the primary metaphorical meaning of kephale rather than "authority/leader," with implications for interpreting 1 Corinthians 11, Ephesians 5, and Colossians 1.
