Hebrews 6:4-6 — the most difficult passage in the Bible; three main interpretive options explored

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 9) 00:46:02 – 00:49:08

Question from Delante Dingo about whether the Parable of the Sower clarifies Hebrews 6 and whether salvation is eternal.

Hebrews 6 describes people who (1) have been enlightened, (2) tasted the heavenly gift, (3) shared in the Holy Spirit, (4) tasted the goodness of the word of God, (5) tasted the powers of the age to come — and then fell away, making it impossible to restore them. Three interpretive options Mike surveys: (a) Corporate/Israel view: refers to Israel collectively receiving the Spirit's work, witnessing miracles, yet rejecting Jesus — you can't re-evangelize the nation to repentance; (b) Pragmatic view: "impossible to restore" means you personally cannot do it, not that God cannot; move on; (c) These are people who appear saved but are not (false professors). Mike finds (c) the weakest — he calls it "fishy" — but does not finalize his own position, promising a full treatment in the future Hebrews series.
