1 Corinthians 10 — food offered to idols has different rules depending on marketplace vs. temple context and whether a pagan makes it explicit

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 9) 01:04:21 – 01:06:25

Mike addresses the idol food question in 1 Corinthians 10 as related to the Christian liberty discussion.

Three layers in 1 Corinthians 8-10: (1) Don't participate in actual idol temple worship. (2) In the marketplace, buy and eat freely — idols are nothing, don't even ask whether it was offered to an idol. (3) If an unbeliever invites you to dinner and tells you the food was offered to an idol, decline — not because the idol is real but because eating it in that context implies participation in their worship. First Corinthians 10:22 ("Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy?") addresses the deeper danger of dabbling in idolatry, not just marketplace purchases.
