Melchizedek question: Is Melchizedek a theophany/Christophany of Jesus, and how does Hebrews know so much about him?

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 10) 00:07:22 – 00:09:26

Question from Christian Liang. Mike provides background on Genesis and Hebrews 7.

Melchizedek appears in Genesis briefly when Abraham returns from rescuing Lot, offers a tithe to Melchizedek, and Melchizedek offers bread and wine. He is mentioned once in Psalms and then extensively in Hebrews 7. Mike notes Melchizedek is the king of Salem (probably ancient Jerusalem), priest of the Most High God (not pagan), and is a picture of Christ. His Levitical significance: through Abraham, the Levites tithed to Melchizedek, showing Melchizedek's priesthood is superior to the Levitical priesthood and precedes the Law.
