Mike cites John 5 where Jesus says if you do not honor the Son you do not honor the Father. Jesus as Emmanuel (God with us) is central -- rejecting his divine identity is rejecting him, which is rejecting the Father. The Son is the mediator; our beliefs about God the Father are insufficient without reception of the Son. Those in the early church who rejected Christ's messianic identity and deity were not considered Christians.
