1 Corinthians 7:3-5 establishes mutual bodily authority in marriage and implicitly rules out polygamy

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 17) 00:22:23 – 00:24:25

Reading and exposition of 1 Corinthians 7 on conjugal rights

Paul says: the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does — and likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. This was radical in Paul's day. The mutual structure rules out polygamy (how can multiple wives each hold exclusive authority over one husband's body?). "Do not deprive one another" except by mutual agreement for a limited time devoted to prayer, then come together again. Paul is correcting an anti-sex asceticism in the Corinthian church.
