Judges is a book designed to show total human depravity — God is the only hero; even the deliverers fail

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 17) 01:08:22 – 01:10:23

Broader theological point drawn from the Judges 20 discussion

The book of Judges progressively reveals moral collapse. The deliverers (Gideon, Jephthah, Samson) each do good and then fail. By Judges 20 you cannot find a good guy to root for anywhere. This is the Old Testament case for the depravity of man. God remains patient and faithful throughout. The deliverers fall short because the ultimate deliverer — Jesus — has not yet come. This provides the Christological significance of the Judges narrative.
