The shorter Septuagint Jeremiah vs. the longer Hebrew Masoretic Jeremiah — reasons to trust the longer canonical form

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 18) 00:53:18 – 00:55:19

Question from Leor about which version of Jeremiah is correct.

The Septuagint (LXX) contains a shorter version of Jeremiah; Mike thinks the LXX translators may have had access only to a partial Hebrew manuscript. Key reasons to trust the longer Masoretic text: (1) sections of the long Jeremiah are quoted in the NT, (2) the longer text was accepted by the Jewish people whose canon Jesus affirmed, (3) Dr. Peter Williams notes the concept of "the Septuagint" as a monolithic entity is itself contested. Generally when LXX diverges from MT, the MT is preferred.
