Matthew 19:12 -- Three categories of eunuchs: from birth, made by men, and self-made for the kingdom

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 20) 00:13:22 – 00:15:54

Question from 'dat boy' about whether eunuchs from birth in Matthew 19:12 includes intersex people, and whether the verse advises eunuchs not to marry.

Contextual background: disciples react to Jesus's teaching on divorce by saying it is better not to marry; Jesus responds that celibacy is a valid option for those who can receive it. Three categories: (1) eunuchs from birth -- physical inability to reproduce present at birth; (2) eunuchs made by men -- castrated by royal authority or involuntary; (3) eunuchs who made themselves so for the kingdom -- voluntary celibacy/singleness, like Paul. By Jesus's day, 'eunuch' had broadened to include simply those who remained abstinent/single, not just the castrated.
