The Messianic Secret in the Gospels: Jesus's commands to silence were temporary, strategic, and progressively lifted as the crucifixion approached.
Question from Justin Harcharik about why Jesus told people not to speak about him (Matthew 8:4; 9:30; 12:16).
Mike observes a progression in the Gospels: earlier portions have more silence commands; later portions have less, culminating in the Great Commission. Two reasons are offered: (1) Premature publicity caused crowds so large Jesus could not continue ministry — he needed time for a full three-year ministry, not a one-month truncated one. (2) Announcement of his messianic identity directly triggered the crucifixion. In Mark's Gospel the shift is dramatic — at Bartimaeus's healing ("Son of David") Jesus lets the man follow him and then rides into Jerusalem on a donkey, deliberately claiming Davidic messiahship and triggering his arrest.
