Matthew 13:44-46 (Pearl of Great Price / Treasure in the Field): interpretation debate — is the person Jesus or the believer? Mike leans toward Jesus as the buyer.
Question from C. Bates about Matthew 13:44-45.
Two interpretive positions: (1) The person is the believer, the treasure/pearl is Christ — one gives up everything to gain Christ. (2) The person is Jesus, the treasure/pearl is the believer/humanity — Jesus sells all (his glory, life, suffering the cross) to purchase us. Mike leans toward the second view, especially for the treasure in the field parable where the man buys the whole field — paralleling Jesus dying for the whole world to redeem those in it. The pearl parable (v.45-46) is more flexible. Both parables may intentionally reflect both dimensions since Christ calls us to take up our cross and sacrifice as he sacrificed.
