Q10: Galatians 4:27 — who is 'the desolate one'? Mike leans toward not forcing the Hagar/Sarah identification; Paul draws on Isaiah 54:1
Viewer Zoe Abundant asks whether the 'desolate one' in Galatians 4:27 refers to Sarah or Hagar.
Mike works through Galatians 4:21-27 — the allegory of the two sons: Hagar (slave, Mount Sinai, Old Covenant, present Jerusalem in slavery) and Sarah (free woman, New Covenant, Jerusalem above). Paul quotes Isaiah 54:1 in Galatians 4:27: 'Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear... the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.' Mike concludes hesitantly: rather than forcing an identification, look at Isaiah 54 in context — Paul is drawing on themes of life-from-death; verse 27 should be read in light of the New Jerusalem (the mother last mentioned) vs. the Sinai covenant, not necessarily a point-by-point Hagar/Sarah mapping.

All who are drawn come to Jesus? John 6:44
In my last post , I showed that Scripture must not be taken out of context by making the word “draw” mean “drag” in John 6:44.
