John 3:16-18 — condemnation precedes unbelief; unbelief leaves you in existing condemnation

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 23) 01:03:46 – 01:04:48

Scriptural support for the pit analogy.

John 3:16-18: 'God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world...whoever has not believed is condemned already.' The phrase 'condemned already' is key: you were already in the pit before you failed to believe. Not believing in Jesus is what keeps you there, not what put you there. 'Sin gives us condemnation; Jesus gives us salvation.' Getting this backwards makes Jesus sound like he condemns people, which is the opposite of John's point.
