Interpretation of Genesis must be driven by hermeneutics, not science

Whatever science says, you do not read any text by first consulting external evidence and then forcing the text to conform. Genesis must be read on its own terms. His departure from confident young-earth creationism was driven entirely by hermeneutical questions (genre, consistency) not by scientific pressure. He anticipates this will upset some people and accepts that.
