Secular music: evaluate by message, not genre; wickedness set to music is still wicked, but neutral or positive messages are fine

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 25) 01:11:26 – 01:15:32

Responding to whether it is sinful to listen to secular music and where to draw the line

Mike previously believed all secular music was basically sinful, but now thinks the correct filter is the message of the music, not the secular/Christian genre distinction. Music promoting wickedness and sin should be avoided. Neutral or positive messages — even from non-Christians — are fine. Applies Romans 14 logic: Christians should not divide over these kinds of convictions. He also notes that being overly strict caused unhealthy divisiveness in his own past. Practical examples: gangster rap promoting violence is out; "You've Got a Friend in Me" is fine.
