Ephesians 5:25-32 — the mystery of marriage as a typological picture of Christ and the church, rooted in the Adam-Eve narrative.

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 28) 00:15:23 – 00:17:27

Discussing the "mystery" Paul refers to in Ephesians 5:32 while addressing the Vulgate question.

Winger argues that Paul's use of "mystery" follows his consistent pattern: something previously hidden or partially understood in the OT that is now fully revealed in Christ. The mystery of marriage is that it was always a picture of Christ and the church. Adam's sleep (a euphemism for death), the removal of his rib (typifying Christ's pierced side), and Eve's formation from it (the church born from the blood and water of Christ's side wound) prefigure the gospel. Jesus, like Adam, dies for his bride and purchases her with his death.
