His general principle: waiting on the Lord means actively seeking the kingdom right now with whatever gifts and opportunities are available. When faced with decisions, ask which choice most benefits the kingdom of Christ. The watchman analogy (Psalm 127 / Isaiah 21) — a watchman waiting for morning is not passive but alert and active at his post.
