Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath: Matthew 12:1-8 and the principle of hierarchical moral reasoning

20 Questions with Pastor Mike (Episode 29) 00:00:00 – 00:07:08

Question from Dakota France about what Jesus means in Matt 12:1-8, whether the Sabbath carries rewards or penalties for Christians.

The Pharisees criticized the disciples for plucking grain on the Sabbath, citing a rabbinic tradition not actually found in Torah (the oral law "fence" around the written law). Jesus responds not by simply dismissing the tradition but by citing two OT precedents: (1) David eating the showbread reserved for priests (1 Sam 21), and (2) priests working on the Sabbath in the temple. Jesus implies a principle: hierarchies of moral importance exist; life and the work of God can legitimately override lesser rules. He then declares something greater than the temple is here and that the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. For Christians, Winger argues we are not under the Law (citing Galatians and Romans 14). The Sabbath is a matter of Christian liberty — observance is permitted but not required. Romans 14 approves of those who observe it to the Lord, but it cannot be bound on others.

No man left behind: Jesus died for all

Did Jesus’ death leave no man left behind that was not covered by His death on the cross? For many Christians who identify as Calvinists, the gospel includes the conclusion that Jesus died only for a select group of people who were predetermined by God before the world was created.
