Resting in God does not mean absence of anguish — the "bedrock" model of Christian peace
Question from Faith Marie about resting in God's presence and staying connected throughout the day.
Winger challenges the assumption that "resting in the Lord" equals constant inner tranquility. Jesus in Gethsemane was in great agony even as he rested in the Father's will. Paul says he is "perplexed but not in despair" (2 Cor 4:8) — low, but not bottomless. Christian peace functions as a bedrock, a floor that limits how low the roller coaster of life can go. No matter the suffering, the Christian holds certain unchangeable truths: God loves me, I am forgiven, God is good, eternal joy is coming. These truths become the floor below which the believer cannot sink. This model also frees pastors to be real three-dimensional people rather than performing artificial peace. Resting in the Lord is compatible with grief, confusion, and agony.
