Using secular music in worship: not wrong in principle, but wisdom demands sensitivity to the congregation
Q13 from Rohin John: What are your thoughts on using secular music with half secular and half Jesus-focused lyrics as worship?
Winger says it is not evil or sinful to rewrite secular music for worship purposes — he knew someone at his church who regularly did this. The key example is Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," which sounds devotional but contains sexually perverse content; some have rewritten only the words while keeping the melody. Winger initially found this difficult to worship to; over time it no longer bothered him. The pastoral/wisdom concern: you are placing this in front of a large, diverse congregation. Some people will struggle with it. The goal of corporate worship is to help as many people as possible praise God without distraction or controversy. Worship should not become a debate topic. So the question is not "is it wrong?" but "is it wise for my specific fellowship?"
