Can you lose salvation if Jesus paid for your sins? Depends on your view of the atonement. Calvinist (limited atonement): Jesus only paid for the elect's sins, so losing salvation would mean he 'unpaid' — impossible. Non-Calvinist (unlimited atonement): Jesus paid for all sins; the APPLICATION is upon those who receive Christ. If someone walks away, it's not that payment was reversed but that they left the relationship.
Losing salvation and the extent of the atonement
If atonement is limited (Calvinist): Jesus paid only for the saved → losing salvation = Jesus unpaying, which is incoherent → supports perseverance of the saints. If atonement is unlimited: Jesus paid for all sin → application is to those who receive Christ → walking away doesn't reverse payment, it leaves the relationship. Mike presents both views without committing, showing how one's atonement theology affects the losing-salvation question.
