The Apostles' willingness to suffer demonstrates sincerity even without formal recantation opportunities. They knew what they were signing up for: Jesus told them they'd be brought before governors and kings (Matthew 10). They watched Stephen die, John the Baptist get executed, and Jesus himself crucified. They repeatedly chose to keep preaching despite imprisonment and beatings (Acts).

Dr. Sean McDowell Critiques “The Myth of Persecution” by Candida Moss 01:10:16 – 01:12:52

Sincerity without formal recantation opportunities

Matthew 10: Jesus explicitly warned they'd face governors, kings, and death. Stephen's martyrdom in Acts 7 was public. The apostles were repeatedly imprisoned, beaten, and threatened throughout Acts. They weren't caught off guard by unexpected violence — they knowingly sustained preaching at the cost of safety, social standing, and potentially life. This isn't dying for beliefs you inherited; it's dying for something you claim to have witnessed.
