Mark Series pt 39: Mark 10:35-45. James and John ask for positions of authority in Jesus's kingdom. Jesus teaches that greatness in his kingdom = servanthood, the opposite of worldly leadership. This passage addresses pastoral abuse at its root: the false expectation that Christian leadership means authority rather than service.

How Jesus Anticipated Pastoral Abuse: The Mark Series pt 39 (10_35-45) 00:00:00 – 00:05:03

Introduction — Mark 10:35-45 and pastoral abuse

James and John want royal status (right and left hand). The other ten are indignant — not because the request is wrong in principle but because they wanted the same thing. Jesus contrasts Gentile rulers (who lord over) with his kingdom (where leaders serve). Mark 10:45: "Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
