The "fickle crowd" preaching point (same crowd shouts Hosanna then Crucify Him) is likely wrong — the Palm Sunday crowd was Jesus' traveling followers, distinct from the city population.
Correcting a common sermon point about the Triumphal Entry crowds
Winger has long been hesitant about this popular preaching point and builds a case against it: (1) Jesus brings the crowd with him — these are followers, not random Jerusalemites; (2) John 7 shows Jesus previously went to feasts secretly, but now goes publicly with his caravan; (3) Matthew 21:10-11 distinguishes the crowds (who shout Hosanna) from "all the city" (who ask "Who is this?") — two different groups; (4) John notes some city people joined, but these were already favorable to Jesus. The city population who didn't know Jesus were more likely the ones shouting "Crucify him" later. Winger urges pastors to test preaching points against the text: "Just because something preaches well doesn't mean we should share it."
