Jesus answers with a PRINCIPLE rather than yes/no: the coin bears Caesar's image (give it back), but YOU bear God's image (give yourself to God). This is a rabbinic "greater to lesser" argument that deflates their trap.

Analysis of "Render to Caesar" as a principled answer

Jesus asks for a denarius — he doesn't have one (further evidence he was poor). The coin bore Tiberius's image with inscription "Tiberius Caesar Augustus, son of the divine Augustus" (blasphemous) and on the back "Pontifex Maximus" (high priest — a title later adopted by the papacy). Jesus's answer deflates the trap three ways: (1) They're already using Caesar's money — hypocrisy to refuse to pay for what they're using; (2) It's a rabbinic "greater to lesser" argument — if we bear GOD'S image and belong to God (which no Jew can deny), then coins bearing Caesar's image belong to Caesar (the lesser claim); (3) It reveals their own hypocrisy. Application for Christians: answer with principles rather than yes/no. Example: instead of "abortion is wrong," say "every human life is immeasurably valuable and those who are strong must protect the weak." Proverbs 15:28: "The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer."
