Jesus will not allow a limited Christology — the Messiah is not just the son of David but God Himself. Mark supports this throughout: Isaiah 40:3 applied to Jesus (Yahweh's coming), Jesus walking on water (quoting Job where God walks on water), the demoniac telling what "the Lord/Jesus" did.

Building the case for the deity of Christ from Mark 12:35-37 and the broader Gospel of Mark

Jesus's riddle is answered by the deity of Christ: David calls him "Lord" because the Messiah IS God. Evidence from Mark: (1) Mark 1:1 — "son of God" from the start; (2) Mark 1:2-3 — Isaiah 40:3 ("prepare the way of Yahweh") applied to John preparing for Jesus; (3) The healed demoniac told to report what "the Lord" (God) did, then tells what Jesus did; (4) Jesus walking on water — quotes Job where God walks on water but is inaccessible; Jesus comes TO the disciples. The earliest Christian epistles (written before Mark) already have the deity of Christ firmly in place — first-century readers would have read Mark 12:35-37 as a deity reference. Liberal scholars who claim deity was a late development are contradicted by the earliest sources.
