Artwork evidence: mostly shows women without coverings, but mainly rich women
Mike surveys archaeological evidence from Corinth.
Cynthia Thompson examined archaeological digs in Corinth near Paul's time. Coins and statues show: Livia (wife of Augustus), various anonymous women, Agrippina -- mostly without coverings. BUT: (1) These are almost all rich/imperial women. (2) The one 'grotesque' (realistic depiction of a commoner/servant) has both a cap AND a cloth covering. (3) Rich women were likely the minority casting off coverings. Ramsey MacMullen's synthesis: rich women who imitated imperial court fashion went uncovered; humbler class went veiled.
